4 Ways to Make Over Your Metabolism - More Magazine
Tretter’s behavior changes raised her level of what Mayo Clinic researcher James Levine has dubbed NEAT, or non-exercise activity thermogenesis. Basically, NEAT is all the movement you engage in that isn’t actually -exercise—so while Tretter’s morning run counts as a workout, all her other changes fall into the NEAT category. In this way, Levine says, the average person can boost her daily energy expenditure by 350 calories. “Just getting off your bottom and standing up requires so much muscular activity that your metabolism spikes immediately,” says Levine. Tretter’s new strategy was inspired by a compact-size gadget called the Gruve Personal Activity Monitor (gruve.com), which was specifically created to keep track of NEAT. The device counts the calories you burn throughout the day, and as the number rises, the Gruve changes color from red to orange to yellow to blue to—yay!—green.

Get Your Gruve On! A Nifty No-Gym Needed Way to Burn Calories - California Meetings & Events
Practicing restraint is impossible. Not when every hundred feet you’re tempted by delicacies from chefs like Wolfgang Puck, Giada de Laurentiis, Joachim Splichal, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger.
At times like this I rely on a little tear-shaped device that I clip to my waistband to make sure I’m getting in some extra calorie burning. Called Gruve, the monitor measures your body’s movements throughout the day, whether you’re taking spin class or going about your business shopping, picking up after the dog, standing at the sink washing out your coffee mug, even fidgeting at your desk while you write up a proposal. Gruve was inspired by Mayo Clinic researcher James A. Levine, MD, PhD, and his work on non-exercise-activity thermogenesis, or NEAT for short. The theory behind NEAT is that increasing everyday movements like standing, bending and walking can help us outsmart our sedentary ways, improving health and even leading to weight loss. As you accumulate calories throughout the day, the Gruve changes color from red to orange to yellow to blue to green. Sit too long at your desk, and the device vibrates, encouraging you to get your Gruve on, even if all you can manage is pacing while you’re on the phone.

Best Practices for a Successful Corporate Wellness Program
The medical community has come forward to speak out about the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. Dr. James Levine, an obsesity specialist and weight loss expert from May Clinic has indicated that the there are extreme dangers in spending too much time sitting. His position has been that sitting for nine hours a day at the office is bad for your health whether you go home and watch television afterward or hit the gym. It is bad whether you are morbidly obese or marathon-runner thin. "Excessive sitting," Dr. Levine says, "is a lethal activity."

Is sitting the new smoking? (Audio Program) - Minnesota Public Radio
James Levine, MD, PhD from the Mayo Clinic and Alan Hedge, PhD from Cornell University discuss the many benefits of moving more each day. Taking opportunities to walk at work throughout the day can add up to 2.25 hours to 2.5 hours of extra walking at work! Studies show that normal people's average walking speeds is actually 1.1 miles per hour which is the median walking velocity of a free living human being. Those are the kinds speeds for activity that is effective for doing work. Dr. Levine said that there is somewhat shocking data that suggests that if you're a good regular gym-goer, three times a week, that may not be as good for your health as interspersing little activity throughout the day, and standing is part of that. Dr. Levine's extensive research on nutrition, activity and behavior related to weight management and obesity prevention over a 10-year period, led him to discovered that basic daily activity – or N.E.A.T. (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) – is the single most important factor of obtaining and maintaining a healthy body weight. His landmark research on N.E.A.T. has been incorporated in the development of the Gruve.

Easy Ways to Burn Fat Faster (Video - The Gruve) - The Dr. Oz Show
Doctor Oz recommends the Gruve as a good way to help burn fat! The Gruve is a device that measures the amount of activity you’re getting by registering your day-to-day activities. A lot of the non-exercise activities like folding clothes, doing laundry, knitting, etc. turn out to be critically important. Frankly anything you do other than sitting down ends up being a huge generator of burnt calories. To demonstrate this, Dr Oz had Kim place the Gruve onto her shirt. She made a bed and when done, plugged the Gruve into the computer to see how many calories have were burned. Surprisingly, Kim burned 12 calories just by making the bed. A few things like that over the course of the day burn off those extra 100 calories. That's the difference between putting on weight or losing weight - it's a very small, little nudge to increase your activity that makes a difference!

Research shows that the more active you are throughout the day (what scientists call non-exercise activity thermogenesis, or NEAT), the slimmer you'll be.
