James Levine, MD, PhD from the Mayo Clinic and Alan Hedge, PhD from Cornell University discuss the many benefits of moving more each day. Taking opportunities to walk at work throughout the day can add up to 2.25 hours to 2.5 hours of extra walking at work! Studies show that normal people's average walking speeds is actually 1.1 miles per hour which is the median walking velocity of a free living human being. Those are the kinds speeds for activity that is effective for doing work. Dr. Levine said that there is somewhat shocking data that suggests that if you're a good regular gym-goer, three times a week, that may not be as good for your health as interspersing little activity throughout the day, and standing is part of that. Dr. Levine's extensive research on nutrition, activity and behavior related to weight management and obesity prevention over a 10-year period, led him to discovered that basic daily activity – or N.E.A.T. (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) – is the single most important factor of obtaining and maintaining a healthy body weight. His landmark research on N.E.A.T. has been incorporated in the development of the Gruve.

Doctor Oz recommends the Gruve as a good way to help burn fat! The Gruve is a device that measures the amount of activity you’re getting by registering your day-to-day activities. A lot of the non-exercise activities like folding clothes, doing laundry, knitting, etc. turn out to be critically important. Frankly anything you do other than sitting down ends up being a huge generator of burnt calories. To demonstrate this, Dr Oz had Kim place the Gruve onto her shirt. She made a bed and when done, plugged the Gruve into the computer to see how many calories have were burned. Surprisingly, Kim burned 12 calories just by making the bed. A few things like that over the course of the day burn off those extra 100 calories. That's the difference between putting on weight or losing weight - it's a very small, little nudge to increase your activity that makes a difference!
